During the 1970’s there were a number of United Nations Development Programs (UNDP) supported projects developed by International Telecommunications Union (ITU). These projects were meant to assist African governments to set up their own centers for basic telecommunications training. A proposal to establish an advanced level training institute for the countries of Eastern and Southern Africa to complement the action already taken in the sub-regions was adapted and funded for in 1987.
African Advanced Level of Telecommunications Training Institute (AFRALTI) was then established as an Intergovernmental Institute to provide advanced level training opportunities to middle and senior level management staff in both technical and managerial positions in the telecommunications sector in Eastern and Southern Africa.
In 2002, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) designated and supported AFRALTI to develop into a center of excellence in the provision of ICT solutions to Organizations in English Speaking African Countries, further broadening its roles to include; provision of Consultancy Services, acting as a focal point for regional information society initiatives, center for seminars colloquia, symposiums and a hub for network of regional training institutions in the information Communication Technologies (ICT) sector, in addition to the initial role of providing advanced training for the telecommunication sector. |
