ADVANCING CYBERSECURITY CAPACITY IN AFRICA: AFRALTI HOSTS FLAGSHIP CSIRT & SOC TRAINING
AFRALTI proudly hosted a high-level regional training on “Strengthening Cybersecurity through Effective CSIRT and SOC Models” at its Main Campus in Nairobi. The programme, facilitated by NRD Cyber Security and sponsored by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) together with the EU Global Gateway Africa, brought together a diverse group of cybersecurity professionals, regulators, and policymakers for a week of intensive, hands-on learning.
Over five days, participants explored the full cycle of establishing and operating Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) and Security Operations Centres (SOCs). The sessions combined practical simulations, case studies, and technical exercises to build capacity in threat detection, incident handling, and real-time response coordination. Special emphasis was placed on creating frameworks for collaboration, recognizing that cyber incidents often cut across borders and require both national and regional readiness.
The training also highlighted the strategic role of cybersecurity in Africa’s digital transformation. With governments, businesses, and citizens increasingly dependent on digital platforms, the need for trusted infrastructure and skilled defenders has never been greater. Participants discussed how effective CSIRTs and SOCs serve as pillars of national cyber resilience, enabling countries to protect critical infrastructure, build public trust, and foster conditions for sustainable digital economies.
Beyond technical skill building, the programme provided a unique platform for peer-to-peer exchange and regional cooperation. Experts from across Africa and beyond shared experiences, lessons learned, and emerging practices, creating a network of professionals committed to advancing collective cyber defense. This collaborative approach reflects AFRALTI’s core mission, combining training, research, and innovation to deliver solutions tailored to Africa’s evolving digital landscape.
By convening this initiative, AFRALTI once again demonstrated its value as a regional center of excellence, capable of linking international expertise to African priorities. The partnership with NRD Cyber Security, ITU, and the EU Global Gateway underscores the importance of aligning global support with regional capacity-building efforts to create impact that endures.
As AFRALTI continues to invest in cybersecurity, connectivity, AI, and digital skills, this programme stands as a reminder that Africa’s digital sovereignty depends not only on technology, but also on the skills, cooperation, and resilience of its people.
Together with its partners, AFRALTI is committed to building the foundations of a secure, inclusive, and sovereign digital Africa.
