4. Open Fibre Data Standard (OFDS)
The Open Fibre Data Standard (OFDS) in Kenya is an initiative led by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) to create a uniform system for mapping terrestrial fibre-optic networks. Backed by World Bank funding, it introduces a shared database to stop route duplication, lower internet costs, and improve broadband planning.
Key Goals of OFDS in Kenya
- Stop Duplication: Prevent companies and public projects from laying new fibre cables along roads where lines already exist.
- Better Spending: Help guide the Digital Superhighway project and the Universal Service Fund to areas that truly need internet.
- Shared Maps: Give regulators and network operators a common language to share non-sensitive infrastructure data safely.
- Network Safety: Improve coordination with road, rail, and power construction work to prevent accidental cable cuts.
